Despite my always sometimes Bah Humbug attitude towards the cold weather, and the me-me-me shoppers, and the really bad drivers, I love this time of year. None of the aforementioned is enough to detract from the magic of the season. The second the calendar flips to December, I’m instantly dreaming of sugarplums dancing in my head. How could I not be?
There’s baking with my moms using my Grandma Fleming’s cookie cutters from the 1930s, which are the best cookie cutters EVER! We’ve tried others, but nothing beats the brilliance of the ones straight out of the Depression.
There’s lunch dates and dinner dates and tea dates with great friends.
German Christmas markets complete with German beer, German hot chocolate, German Christmas ornaments, and German pigs on a spit … okay, I didn’t actually like that part of it.
Chocolates in the office, colourful wreaths, the most un-perfect Charlie Brown sparkling tree, lovebirds instead of angels on top of the tree, and the ants-in-your-pants anticipation waiting for presents to fill up under the tree.
And singing!!! Ohhh, the singing 😀
Twenty two days into December we are, which means 22 days into my Christmas caroling we are – much to the dismay of all those around me. I have, uhm, dare I say, a voice that’s, uhm, brilliant!!! Mario disagrees. He says there’s no one flatter in tone than me. The nerve, I know! I show him though, I just keep on singing and singing. He’s bound to love it one of these days. And seriously, next to birthdays, Christmas is my time to shine. When I was a kid, I used to belt out Frosty the Snowman and Silver Bells and Silent Night like there were no other songs in the world, and I was good, really, really good. The fact that I was put in the back row of our school concerts didn’t cause me concern, oh no, I just thought I was taller than the other girls. Mario shakes his head at this reasoning, though. You’re bad, he says. The choir teacher was too nice to boot you out, he says. Bah! That just makes me want to sing louder, and sing loud I do.

"In the meadow we can build a snowman, and pretend that he is parson brown, he'll say are you married we'll say NO MAN! But you can do the job when you're in town. Later onnnnn we'll conspire, as we dreammmmm by the fire, to sing a love song as we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland..."
But seriously, what is with the lack of Christmas movies? I cancelled my plans last Saturday night to instead stay at home for an evening alone, relaxing in front of the TV, wrapping presents, with goops of mud on my face, and looking forward to a little Christmas spirit through the likes of Frosty the Snowman, A Christmas Carol, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, a little Ralphy and the B.B. Gun, even Elf would have sufficed. But nothing, not one channel had any of the Christmas classics showing, much to my dismay.
What’s your favourite Christmas movie/carol?
