How is it that the non-runner has more running gumption these days than the runner? Here’s a conversation I never thought I’d be having:
Runner: I think I’ve lost my love for running.
Non-runner: Nah, come out for a run with me tonight, you’ll get it back.
Runner: It’s freaking cold out.
Non-runner: It’s a beautiful night.
Runner: My toes are numb, they’re icicles.
Non-runner: Keep running, they’ll warm up.
What the heck is going on here, it’s like a collision of worlds has happened and I’ve ended up in the wrong world!
The last thing Mario said to me before I left for work this morning was “We’re going for a run tonight right,” and followed it up with an encouraging fist bump. Sure, I said, why not. But as the day slowly dwindled my motivation quickly lagged. I kept feeling phantom tightness and pains in my calves, knees, ankles, and my stomach too, and I kept coming up with excuses, mostly along the lines of it being freaking cold outside. I did just drive through a blizzard this morning after all (forget that it didn’t really stick, but whatever, there was snow, I saw it).
Thankfully I had to pick up my race package for the New Years Day Resolution Run at the Running Room. That would surely inject me full of running energy. And it did. I was around running gear, and running folk, and I talked to a couple of my peeps, I was good to go … or so I thought.
But then I got back into my car. And an hour stuck in traffic is a real killjoy let me just say. But luckily for me, Mario too has ended up in a reversal of worlds and is using his desires for a run to get my butt out the door. And he was right. I did warm up, it was a beautiful night, and my love for running has not dissipated, it’s just battling the cold temperatures is all … I have mentioned that I’m a fairweather runner right 😀
