Sometimes, I think I was meant to be of the male species. Shocking, you say. Yes, yes, I love my skirts and dresses, and the colour pink, and being a total girly girl. But I also love drinking beer with the boys. Maybe it has something to do with growing up with a big brother and a big, big brother and always wanting to do what the big boys were doing. Regardless, I’ve almost always felt more comfortable with the boys than I have with the girls (sorry girls) they’re just … easier.
So last night when Mario asked if I wanted to join him and his best mans for a night at the UBC Grand Prix, which meant I’d essentially be crashing a boys night, I didn’t even think twice in my acceptance. I am practically one of the guys, just a lot more pretty is all 😀
Sure, I had things to do. I had planned on blogging and on hitting the bike trainer for the first time in like forever! But, really, isn’t watching bike racing a whole lot more exciting than pedaling the trainer? Yes, yes it is.
The UBC Grand Prix is part of BC Superweek, which consists of several independent cycling events across the Lower Mainland, including Tour de Delta, Tour de White Rock, and Giro di Burnaby (which Mario will be covering tomorrow night) and has attracted several up and coming professional racers like Tyler Farrar, Chris Horner and even Lance Armstrong. Just last year, Mario and I witnessed former Team Garmin cyclist Svein Tuft dominate the Yaletown Grand Prix, which was super cool.
But last night’s race had something I’m betting none of those others did, a play-by-play guy, who I’m pretty sure was half corked, using such descriptors as: “strung out like a junkie on East Hastings…” and “out of the saddle like a celery stick…” and the best, “like a dog humping a football.” Yes, he did actually say that! That alone made the evening, and then paired with drinks on the patio talking nonsensical boy things afterwards, brilliant.

So, I’ve been noticing lately that my motivation has been waning when it comes to getting me out for my runs. Sure I feel great afterwards, but getting my butt out that door is like trying to get a kid to take a bath; I fight tooth and nail with my inner demon. And on tonight’s run, which was a really great feeling, fast-paced run, I realized it likely has something to do with the fact that I haven’t had my core group of favourite running chicks alongside me, as we’re all on different training plans. So, new plan: I am going to schedule myself to run with my favourite running chick as much as I possibly can, whether she likes it or not, but she’ll love it, because well, it’s me, and she has to love me 😀
