What would you save if your house were on fire?
Your wedding photos?
For me, none of the above.
At about 4:30 a.m. this morning, Mario and I were awoken to an ear-piercing roar of a noise blaring through our condo. We jumped out of bed; I had no idea what was going on, or where the heck this noise was coming from. We quickly learned that it was the smoke alarm, and so Mario shut it off (oh yeah, we’re safe like that) but the blaring continued outside in the hallway. Mario speculated that someone probably just yanked on the fire alarm, which was enough of a reason for me to climb back into bed and throw the pillow and covers over my head, trying my best to drown out the deafening noise. Mario, being the great journalist that he is, went to investigate. A couple minutes later he came back into the apartment, and said “Uhm, I think we got to go, there’s smoke in the hallway.”
I jumped out of bed, and the one thing I grabbed – my most favourite pair of jeans! I couldn’t possibly let them go up in flames, now could I 😉
The building was evacuated for about a half an hour (and it was freezing cold, but thankfully it wasn’t raining … or snowing). It turns out the apartment, two down and one floor below us, somehow caught on fire, and even though it was a small fire, it stunk up the whole place. Ick.
I tried to go back to sleep for the hour I had remaining before I had to get up for work, but was unsuccessful due to my insulin pump deciding it needed a new battery and vibrating against my waist every few minutes – bad timing.
And if that wasn’t enough, on my way to work, I went through practically every weather system there is: sun, rain showers, thunder storms, hail, snow (yes, snow in April) and back to sun again.
Oh what a day.
And yet, I still managed to get down to the gym after work, despite all the excuses I was giving myself as to why I really shouldn’t go, like being freaking tired!
- 6:15 p.m. BG 4.5 (fruity goodness bar)
- 25 minutes treadmill: 5 minutes walking, 20 minutes running, 2% incline, 5.0 speed, 3.2 km (forgot to check out my pace … next time)
- 25 minutes weights: leg curl, leg extension (I’m not sure I like this one, my knee cracks) leg press, chest press (3 repetitions of 12 each)
- 5 minutes cooldown: treadmill, walking
- 20 minutes yoga/stretching
- 7:15 p.m. BG 3.0 (eek!)
I’m thinking I’m going to have to start calculating a temporary basal rate (continuous background insulin) for my gym workouts now, given that the last few times my blood glucose has been dropping down quite a bit.
As tired as I was, though, I’m glad I fought through the excuses. The workout was a nice refresher, especially since the gym was empty … but now I’m beat, and gonna hit the hay. Hopefully there won’t be another 4:30 a.m. wakeup call!
