My legs AND brain are feeling the motivation – thanks to all of you!
Not even 24 hours after writing Thursday’s plea for help on how to get my butt running out the door, I committed myself to yet another marathon. That’s right, folks, I am not waiting until the fall as planned, I’m doing it now – with the most amazing running chicks ever. It’s what I need. I can tell myself to go for a run over and over again, but without a goal in sight it’s like the never-ending battle of negotiation going on inside my head. A battle where my love of running tends to lose more times than I’d like to admit.
So on Friday morning when one of my girls informed me of the Run for Water marathon (a first time marathon) being held this spring in the Valley, it just seemed right. While it’s not an exotic getaway like my last one was, and it likely won’t have the roaring hub bub that the big races get, it does offer a route, location, and month that is pretty near perfect for me. First, the Valley is where my entire family lives, they’ll have no excuse not to come cheer me on. Second, the Valley is where I train and looking at the map of this race, it’s all along my roads, which happen to be perfectly flat roads = no downhill knee pain for me! Third, May in the Valley is generally sunny in the Valley. And fourth, my favourite running chicks will be right there with me too. Perfection.

And it’s a good thing I finally found my motivation given that we’re in the month of December, the best cookie month EVER!
Day 1 of Christmas baking: My moms and I spent the day on Saturday baking up gingerbread men and melt-in-your mouth shortbread cookies. Gingerbread, bar none, is my most favourite Christmas cookie; has been ever since I was a kid. But I’ve always been quite particular about my gingerbread: I don’t like icing, I don’t like sprinkles, I even crinkle my nose up at Smarties and M&Ms and I love M&Ms, but I don’t like them mixing with my love of the gingerbread. So why I decided this year to try a new gingerbread recipe after my tried and true recipe has never once failed me, I don’t know. I was intrigued by this new recipe, it used crushed white pepper, I’d never heard of such a thing, and it didn’t require an hour of refrigeration, which sounded super efficient. I had to give it a go.
The result: Interesting. My dad really didn’t like it, said it had a horrible aftertaste, which I didn’t experience. But I did think there was a bit of a bite to it, while eating it, which I wasn’t opposed to, but gingerbread I think is like stuffing, where a recipe that you have loved for years and years is hard, if not impossible, to replace with a new love. And so, it’s back to the family gingerbread recipe I go next year.
